Interview with lead vocalist, Duke Lopez ~

Q. How long have the Dukes been together?
Duke: The band has been together for 7 years and my experience goes back to 1973. Bands that I was a part of before were the Blue Mist Band, and then the former group members of Bruno Blanco and the Marvels. All of the current members have also had prior experience in the music world from tropical, metal, and Spanish.

What are your top influences musically?
Duke: Roy Montelongo, Augustin Ramirez, Sunny Osuna, Ramon Ayala, and Little Joe and the Latinairs. Also, Juan Gabriel, Joan Sabastian, Marco Antonio Solis, and Jose Alfredo Jimenez.

Tejano was considered extinct for a while, why is playing tejano important to you & your band mates?
Duke: We enjoy and find that people still enjoy Tejano music and seek it out. We don't want to see this old style die out. I believe that Tejano music has evolved so much to the point that it lost it's popularity, so we continue to play the old style of an era that was abundant & promising.

What is an ideal gig for you?
Duke: The first thing that comes to mind is a good sized stage where everyone is comfortable, a dance floor, and where everyone is connected to the music that we are playing .

What does the future hold for The Dukes?
Duke: I never felt as though there was a time where I wanted to be super-famous, like going out on the road. As the band, we'd like to have the recognition of keeping old-school tejano alive and be able to please people by doing what we do for as long as we can.
